Udyam, DPIIT, EPFO, and ESIC: a business-registration map

Indian businesses can encounter several public systems beyond tax and corporate filing. Their names are often grouped together, but they serve different purposes and have different eligibility and operational rules.

Udyam is an MSME registration route

The official Udyam portal describes itself as the authorised portal for MSME registration and states that registration is free, paperless, and self-declaration based. Use the live portal for current classification and registration criteria.

DPIIT recognition is different

Startup India describes DPIIT recognition as a route for eligible startups to access a set of benefits and services. Recognition is not the same as incorporating a company, obtaining GST registration, or completing every other applicable compliance step.

Employer lanes require fact checks

EPFO’s employer page describes registration and monthly-return/payment facilities for covered establishments. ESIC is a separate employer-compliance system. Whether either applies depends on the establishment and current rules, so route the question for confirmed review.
